International Task Force Meeting, Part II

The International Task Force - ITF - is made up of representatives from each of the organizations with whom Internet2 has partnered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) (click here for more information on international partners). The ITF serves as the forum for discussion of international issues relevant to the development of a high-performance, leading-edge network infrastructure, advanced technologies and applications for research and education.

This session will be particularly suitable to the newcomer wishing to learn more about the international connections and partnerships of Internet2 and the status of advanced networking initiatives around the world as well as provide an update to regular attendees on ongoing projects, collaborations, network infrastructure buildout in various regions of the world, etc. Please click here for agenda.

IEEAF Update

The Internet Educational Equal Access Foundation (IEEAF) has been successful in obtaining donations of bandwidth and dark fiber in several parts of the world. This presentation will give a short update, emphasizing actual utilization of donated assets.

ASIA/PACIFIC

ANF Update

Sanggyun Kim, Yongjin Park, ANF (Korea)

In this presentation, ANF will be introduced toward internet2 members, and showed environment in Korea. Regarding collaboration, we show 3 areas which work actively. Those are HEP(High Energy Physics), Medical, and Cultural Exchange with HD over IP. Moreover, ANF have
some challeges to global research & education network.

APAN Update - Asia and Pacific Rim

Shigeki Goto, APAN (Asia/Pacific Rim) [presentation]

APAN has recently elected Prof. Shigeki Goto as the new chair of APAN. In his talk, he will introduce the new vice chairs as well as the new managing director of APAN.  This presentation starts with the characteristics of Asia region which enhance the motivation of APAN activities.

Dr. Goto illustrates the current network topology of APAN and regional groups in APAN: North Asia, South East Asia, Oceania and South.  He will explain two backbone networks in Japan and their multiple links between US and Japan.  There is a good collaborations among multiple links.

In his talk, Prof Goto illustrates several applications of APAN links: e-VLBI, Data Reservoir and the deployment of Abilene Observatory in APAN. Prof. Goto also summarizes the current status of APAN members to respond to NSF IRNC solicitation.

United States Update

CLARA Update


Michael Stanton , CLARA (Latin America) [presentation]

CLARA (Latin American Cooperation for Advanced Networking) is an association of national research and education networks from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LA&C), with the aim of encouraging the establishment of national advanced research and education networks, and their interconnection through the RedCLARA regional network. RedCLARA is being set up in collaboration with the European Union, through the ALICE project coordinated by DANTE, and is already linked to GÉANT. The talk will give some details about the current state of RedCLARA and expectations for the coming months.

A large number of U.S. academic and medical researchers are involved in projects across Africa. Yet this region remains noticeably absent from the worldwide high capacity, high performance network revolution. In this talk, the status of network initiatives will be reviewed and the opportunities for improvement will be discussed.
