International Activities - Spring 2003

International Collaborations and Advanced Networking Projects
International Task Force Meeting, Part I

Tuesday, April 8, 2003
1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Salon J/K
Crystal Gateway Marriot Hotel, Arlington, VA.

The ITF is made up of representatives from each of the organizations with whom Internet2 has partnered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The ITF serves as the forum for discussion of international issues relevant to the development of a high-performance, leading-edge network infrastructure, advanced technologies and applications for research and education.
On the first part of this meeting (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.), we will have presentations from several International Partners and Internet2 members. From 4:00 p.m. to 5 p.m., we will also have relevant information for International Partners and updates from International Exchange Points and connections within Internet2.

FINAL Agenda

1:00 PM

Welcome and opening remarks
Ana Preston, Internet2 International [ppt]

1:05 PM

CERNET Update and Joint Videoconference Project
Xing Li, Jianping Wu, Congxiao Bao, CERNET (China) [ppt]

NOTE: This will be a remote presentation

China Education and Research Network (CERNET) is the largest academic Internet backbone in China. It reaches all the provincial capitals via 155M-2.5G backbone and connects 1000+ universities and research institutes. CERNET is Internet2 MoU partner and currently has a 45M link to STARTAP and a 10M link to APAN. CERNET provides unicast and native multicast services.
CERNET has been providing unicast (H.323) and multicast (AccessGrid) video services to CERNET members since 2001. Currently, CERNET maintains video conferencing facilities in more than 10 cities. The global/regional academic conferences such as SC2001, CANS2002 and APAN2002 were using CERNET video services. Chinese graduate student application interview of Boston University has been hosted in CERNET for two years and the video service will be provided to Indiana University and University of Texas at Austin in 2003.
CERNET videoconference services will be extended to 30+ cities in 2003. The design, implementation and management of a large-scale videoconference system are challenging. The research activities are carrying on in the areas, such as large scale dialing plan, the smart gateway between H.323 system and the multicast system, the time zone crossing scheduling system and the quality control for heterogeneous network environments.
We propose to have joint projects on providing H.323 and multicast videoconference services to CERNET member universities and Internet2 member universities. The possible projects could be the joint seminars and workshops, the interview services and the remote lecturing.

1:25 PM

World Summit on the Information Society
Artur Serra, UPC I2cat (Spain) [ppt1] [ppt2]

1:45 PM

The DataTAG project
Olivier Martin, CERN (Europe) [ppt]

The EU DataTAG (research technological development for a transatlantic Grid) is now entering its second year. The speaker would like to present the status of the project and the results obtained so far in the area of Gigabit/second file transfer and interopeability between, Globus based, EU and US Grid projects.

2:05 PM

MeteoForum: An International Network of Meteorological Training Centers for the 21st Century
Tom Yoksas, Unidata Project/UCAR (U.S.) [ppt]

MeteoForum is a pilot project whose goal is the creation of an international network of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Meteorological Training Centers (RMTCs). The RMTCs will work collaboratively with universities to enhance their roles of regional training and education. By accessing a comprehensive, internationally developed collection of training materials, software, and real-time and historical data, the RMTCs will be able to enrich the education they offer to hydro-meteorological professionals in their region.
MeteoForum will build a stronger sense of "community" among the RMTCs through Internet-based interactions and through the sharing of educational concepts, educational materials, and hydro-meteorological data with one another and with their affiliated universities.
A key element in the ultimate success of MeteoForum is the availability of good-quality, high-speed networking at participating institutions. Sharing of high-volume, real-time, hydro-meteorological data between Unidata universites and the RMTC located at the Universidade Federal do Para in Belem have been made possible by the Internet-2 connectivity provided by the National Research Network (RNP) of Brazil through the AMPATH project of Florida International University and Global Crossing. Current efforts aimed at expanding this data sharing network to MeteoForum sites in Argentina, Costa Rica, and Barbados will be presented.
MeteoForum is being developed jointly by the COMET and Unidata programs of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.

2:25 PM

SERENATE: Strategic Studies into the Future of Research and Education Networking in Europe
Karel Vietsch, TERENA (Europe) [pdf]

SERENATE is the name of a collection of studies into the expected evolution of research and education networking in Europe, at the local, national, pan-European and intercontinental level. SERENATE investigates the strategic aspects of the development of networks at 100 Gb/s and beyond, looking at the technical, organisational and financial aspects, the market conditions and the regulatory environment. The SERENATE project consists of fourteen interrelated studies and workshops, and covers a period of seventeen months, from May 2002 to September 2003. In the presentation a number of results from the first half of the SERENATE project's lifetime will be discussed, and some indications will be given of the eventual main conclusions and recommendations from the work.

Updates of Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN)
Kyoko Day, APAN (Asia) [ppt]

Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) is a non-profit international consortium established in 1997. The objective is to be a high-performance network for research and development on advanced applications and services. In order to lead the AP research community, we are expanding and promoting collaborative researches with regional as well as the worldly renowned research organizations.
During the past year, APAN expanded its staff at the Central Secretariat, activities, and membership. The key leaders of APAN has been discussing to establish a long-term plan and held Strategic Retreat Meetings as well.
The last APAN Meeting was held in Fukuoka, Japan on 20 - 25 January 2003, collocated with the 3rd PRAGMA Workshop. It was a great success and attended by 345 people from 14 countries, including 81 for the PRAGMA meeting. The upcoming major meetings include the 16th APAN Busan Meeting in Korea on 25-29 August 2003 and the 17th APAN Honolulu Meeting on 25-31 January 2004, collocated with Internet2 Member Meeting. At the Honolulu meeting, there's a plan to hold APAN/Internet2 Joint Technical Workshop.
Sri Lanka joined as an Associate Member. Asian Committee for Future Accelerators (ACFA), Pacific Wave, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNET), and Asia Pacific Regional Technology Centre (APRTC) became Affiliate Members. Accordingly, more committees were created to support the members' activities.
The details of the updates will be presented at International Task Force Meeting.
