Extending
the reach of advanced networking
Special international workshop, following the Spring 2004 Internet2
Member Meeting
When:
Thursday, April 22, 2004
Where: Crystal
Gateway Marriot, Arlington, VA
Cost: $35.00 US - please note that this workshop requires a separate
registration from the Spring 2004 Internet2 Member meeting.
NOTE: Workshop participation is limited to 100 participants.
The workshop is being hosted by Internet2 under the auspices of the
BoF (Birds-of-a-feather) group of Internet2
members and partners which
has been meeting and discussing issues regarding extending the reach
of research and education networking, including to research and education
communities:
- in countries that are currently unreachable via dedicated
research and education networks (due to lack of resources within
that country, lack of political awareness, regulatory and economic
challenges).
- with facilities within countries that may have some level
of dedicated REN (research and education networking) connectivity
but are currently unconnected due to geographic or technical reasons.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together International partners
and members of the Internet2 community with a number of individuals
from various development, aid and science agencies in Washington, DC
and elsewhere. During the workshop, we hope to discuss opportunities
for collaboration and to highlight projects and approaches from the
research and education networking community on getting to and addressing
the challenges in places where advanced networking is still needed.

Background
Back in the Fall 2002 Internet2 Member meeting, we organized a session
that featured presentations on three projects working
to connect researchres with data, facilities and other researchers
in Africa, southeastern Asia, southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean.
During this seesion, issues that were discussed included technology
used, lessons learned and how we can continue to expand advanced networking
connectivity for the worldwide research community. After the session,
we had a BoF where
participants shared more on challenges, ideas, opportunities and successful
case studies. Since then, we have held these BoFs at each member meeting
(see below), hoping to provide a forum for:
- Sharing information about initiatives underway in various areas
- Sharing information about facilities/data/researchers that need
to be reached
- Discussing any possible role for the Internet2 community in this
area
