International Transit Network (ITN) Service

In conjunction with STAR TAP/Starlight and CA*Net, Internet2 implemented an International Transit Network (ITN) service. This service provides transit over Internet2 to all of Internet2's non-US peers. In other words, all non-US peers can reach other non-US peers via Internet2 (as transit) and also CA*Net and STAR TAP.

International Peering

The Internet2 Network is the foremost advanced, national research and education network in the United States. Non-US national research and education networks (NRENs) can peer with the Internet2 Network.

How can non-US networks peer with the Internet2 Network?

Generally, the Internet2 Network peers with non-US NRENs with which Internet2 has agreed to exchange traffic and which have agreed to conform to the Internet2 AUP. These are networks that have a primary commitment to serving the research and education community.

Peering with the Internet2 network is preferable via international connection points (also referred to as exchange points) which facilitate peering among multiple US and international research and education networks.

Peering can also be done via international links such as TransPAC2 or via other networks connected to the Internet2 Network, e.g., CLARA or GEANT2.

Other peering options are reviewed on a case by case basis.

International connection points and international links are often run by Internet2 member universities.

International connection points allow non-US peers to not just peer with the Internet2 network but with a number of other research and education networks in the US, including US government research networks (like ESnet, DREN, and NASA networks).

Internet2 provides transit to and between all non-US peers that connect to Internet2 (see also ITN service). And between non-US peers and US federal goverment networks by request.
